Mazia House theater center

Mazia House Theater center was opened several years ago and house three theater groups: Psik Theater, The Jerusalem Theater group and Incubator-which was established by graduates of the Nissan Nativ School of theater-Jerusalem branch.

The center consists of two buildings: the original home of Dr. Mazia one of the first eye doctors in the country, a businessman and a linguist who wrote the first Hebrew Latin medical dictionary.

The second was built in the nineteen fifties and together were used for a school. With the decline of number of residents in the city center the school was abandoned and it became a refuge for homeless and a center for drug addicts.

When we suggested to turn the project into a theater center –the first such project in a strategic move to provide homes for all major cultural institutions in Jerusalem-there was a lot of skepticism. The cost of 18 mil. NIS was also something of a rarity in Jerusalem at that time. However the immediate success of the project and its easy and fast route to become a major cultural center paved the way to future projects.
